The 2011/12 Weet-Bix Cup Finals Day was held yesterday (March 11) at the Sydney Cricket Ground with Como-Janalli (U/16s), Ingleburn RSL (U/14s) and Revesby Workers (U/12) crowned champions in their respective divisions.

The Weet-Bix Cup is a junior Twenty20 tournament for club sides in the U/12, U/14 and U/16 divisions. The tournament is focused on participation with modified rules ensuring that as many kids are involved in each match as possible.

Yesterday’s Finals were the culmination of a summer long competition. To reach the Weet-Bix Cup Finals Day teams had to first win their own regional competition called the Brett Lee Cup. Each Regional Champion then progressed to the Semi Finals of the Weet-Bix Cup.

The first match of the day saw Como-Jannali defeat Normanhurst-Warrawee by eight wickets. Bowling first, Como-Jannali ripped through the opposition top order and bowled them out for 84, with Blake Woodward taking 4-15. They reached the victory target in 12 overs with Tom Doyle (41 not out) leading the way.

This was Como-Jannali’s second Weet-Bix Cup after the same side took out the U/14 Division last summer.

The U/14s saw Ingleburn RSL defeat Normanhurst-Warrawee by seven wickets, spearheaded by a brilliant all-round effort from Nick Riddell.

Batting first, Normanhurst-Warrawee made 9-99 from their 20 overs with Ben Wallwood (40) and Anthony Johnston (31) their top scorers, while Nick Riddell took 3-7 for Ingleburn with the ball. Riddell then came out and smashed 52 not out to lead his side to victory.

The U/12 Final between Caringbah and Revesby Workers was arguably the match of the day with Revesby Workers winning by just four runs.

Revesby Workers batted first and made 8-111, the highest score of the day, with Lachlan Willmore top scoring with 30. Jesse Newton bowled beautifully for Caringbah with his three wickets for just three runs crucial in slowing down the opposition.

Caringbah chased hard and did well to keep pace with the required run rate in the face of some tight bowling. Their chase was led by Austin Waugh and he made 30 before hitting a sharp catch to point.

The Caringbah middle and lower order tried hard in the last few overs but in the end it was Revesby Workers who prevailed in a thrilling match.

Match Scores – 2011/12 Weet-Bix Cup Finals Day

Player of the Match: Lachlan Willmore

U/14s

Ingleburn RSL 3-100 (Nick Riddell 52no, Chris Habib 21; Ben Wallwood 1-2) defeated Normanhurst-Warrawee 9-99 (Ben Wallwood 40, Anthony Johnston 31; Nick Riddell 3-7)

Player of the Match: Nick Riddell

The major achievement for any club is to win the “Bertshell Trophy” – the Club Championship.

To determine the winner of the Club Championship, a calculation based on the following is applied:

A grade teams – winning points multiplied by 6.

B grade teams – winning points multiplied by 4.

C grade teams – winning points multiplied by 3.

D grade teams -winning points multiplied by 2.

E grade teams -winning points multiplied by 1.

Aggregate points then divided by the number of teams plus one.

Congratulations to the Como Jannali Cricket Club, who are proud recipients of the Bertshell Trophy for 2011/12. This award is more than just a trophy, it represents the hard work of the volunteers within the club, whom are dedicated to bringing the best out of the players. For Como, this is the 1st time since 1999/2000 that they have been awarded the Club Championship – an outstanding achievement in rebuilding the club.

After many phone conversations, checking fields around the Shire and consulting with Council over which fields have been mowed I believe that there are 5 fields that will be unplayable tomorrow:

Waratah Oval

Woronora Heights

Oyster Bay Oval

Scylla Bay

Prince Edward Park.

So that we the best opportunity to get 18 finals commenced tomorrow I have made the following changes:

16A moved from Waratah to Ridge South

16B moved from Oyster Bay to Ridge North

16C moved from Solander South to Woolooware High School (you may need keys to get in)

14A moved from Ridge South to Solander South

10D moved from Scylla Bay to Miranda Park (on The Boulevarde behind the Kindergarten)

10E moved from Prince Edward Park to Caringbah North.

I would also advise the following:

14E at Sutherland 2: you will need to clear muddy water off the pitch and a shovel to repair trenches that have been dug on the field to drain water. Get there early.

12D at Anzac 1: you will need a broom and perhaps a blower to dry the pitch and remove rubbish.

10B at Gwawley West: the pitch may need some drying.

There are many fields that are water-logged and many fields that have not been mowed. The fields that we are using are the best fields to guarantee that we get to play tomorrow.

Over to you, good luck.

Tom Croucher
Competition Manager SSJCA

With 4 coaches we split the squad into 4 groups and for the 4 training nights rotated through batting, bowling, catching and fielding sessions.

We split the squad into 2 teams and organised 3 games:

The 1st 40 over match ended in a tie

The 2nd 40 over match was washed out

The Twenty Match on Glenn McGrath Oval ended in a win by one wicket.

I would like to wish the boys well for their future cricket careers and I look forward to seeing them playing in SSJCA competitions and representing the Shire in the years ahead.

Thank you boys for your infectious enthusiasm.

The clubs earned their place on Finals Day after emerging victorious from the Weet-Bix Cup Semi Finals, played yesterday (February 26) at the David Phillips North and South Ovals in Sydney.

Match Results:

U/12s

Revesby Workers 1-89 (Willmore 36no, Rorison 32no, Charlton 1-7) defeated Emu Plains 6-87 (Kennedy 24, Agius 23, O’Leary 2-8)

Caringbah 7-98 (Dunlop 38no, Newton 22, Hayes 3-6, Bishop 2-15) defeated Normanhurst-Warrawee 9-57 (Cheng 18, Bagnall 4-5)

U/14s

There was some terrific Twenty20 cricket played on the day, including a classic Semi Final between Norwest and Como-Jannali in the U/16s.

After being reduced to 4-45 after 10 overs, Norwest rallied to post a very competitive 7-130 from their 20 overs. In reply, Como-Jannali found themselves needing four runs from the last over to win with victory coming with a boundary from the second ball.

The Weet-Bix Cup is a junior Twenty20 competition for club teams in the U/12, U/14 and U/16 Divisions. The competition encourages participation with the rules modified to ensure as many kids as possible are involved in each match,

Teams start by competing within their own regions, Sydney North, South, East and West. The top two teams from each region play off for the title of Regional Champion, with each winner receiving the Brett Lee Trophy. The Regional Champions then advance to the Semi Finals of the Weet-Bix Cup.
